Scripts you can use
When asked for expectations early
“I’m focused on finding the right fit. Based on the role and market data, I expect a competitive range. I’d love to learn more about responsibilities before aligning on numbers.”
Countering an offer
“Thank you for the offer. Given my experience in [impact] and the market range of [X–Y], I’m seeking [target number]. Is there flexibility on base or other components like equity and signing bonus?”
Negotiating non-cash benefits
“If base can’t move, could we consider a signing bonus or a six-month compensation review tied to [goals]? Flexibility on [remote/learning budget] would also help.”
Dos and don’ts
